The threat of a nuclear apocalypse is kind of overstated if you ask me. Worst case scenario most major cities get destroyed which is obviously horrifying and will cause lots of casualties, but that doesn't mean it would usher in some kind of global nuclear winter.

Don't forget way more than 2 nukes have been exploded in history. Literally thousands and thousands of them have been exploded in the atmosphere by just the US and russia alone doing tests in the 40s and 50s.

A nuke is big but it's a blip compared to the size of the earth. Volcanoes frequently release thousands of times the energy of the largest nuclear weapons and most people don't even notice unless they watch the news.

In summary: Nukes are no big deal change my mind.

I always wondered what life would be like after the shock of the first two atomic bombs, the 2 world wars, and threats of global annihilations made by the cold war were forgotten by following generations.

That does sound promising though. Id like to look into the differences between the nukes we test vs nukes in a global thermo nuclear war affect the earth.

If Russia really wanted to nuke they would have by now instead of sending mewling negotiation offers to the UN.

Might get to smoke some Wagners again though.

Now even the prez of ukraine sayz the invasion is set for wed.

Putin made it clear, if he loses a war by conventional means because they have much less power than NATO then he will fucking kill us all.

Well that's kinda what I mean, many of the tests were *way* more powerful explosions than nagasaki or hiroshima by orders of magnitude.

In a sense, the planet has already been through a global thermo-nuclear war, the bombs just weren't exploded anywhere with people living.

Though to be fair, nuclear testing was also globally outlawed. I just don't see a T2-style nuclear dystopia ever actually happening. I'm sure we'll kill ourselves off some other way first.

Neither side blinked during the Cold War and things are much mellower now.

I don't think kids even do nuke drills in school anymore.

Atmospheric detonations are less irradiating than soil or water detonations.

Can't phrase that right but I'm sure you get the gist.

No self-interested party would genuinely threaten nuclear war, and russia is nothing if not self-interested like most countries are. Mutually-assured destruction is still the best game in town as far as staving off the end times.

"Atmospheric" just means not underground, so if your test bomb is just kinda sitting in a shed like castle bravo was, there's still a ton of fallout even though it's technically an atmospheric test . And most nukes in a war *would* be exploded over the ground for maximum shockwave destruction. So again, in many ways the tests were way worse environmentally.

the thing about mutually assured destruction is the folks that can do it are mutually assured they'll survive it.

If that's the case, then America has zero leverage over a dumpster fire like Russia nor north Korea or the CCP.

We're the only functioning economy of the bunch.
