EQ is not a cult. A cult holds irrational beliefs about a future reality, and a mythical past, as their main course. A cult does not simply "absorb your time" but in fact just ignores it, denies it has any value, really, by turning you into someone who thinks about fantasy pasts and fantasy futures, to hell with the present, like Trumpism.

EQ is more like a hobby, a really intense hobby. It's like what pickleball is for people who summer. They genuinely identify themselves as, "I am a (pickleball/everquest) player."

It's a topic I'm I may revisit in its own thread and will try to adequately defend if I feel getting back into this FQ community. It's a hard thing to do, to go to ground zero for a special interest and be critical at all. Let me tell you I have not made a whole lot of feminist friends on Reddit. Far be it from me to criticize EQ. Who am I to suggest it's basically a harmful drug/gambling addiction and a cult? I agree I shouldn't do that.

Yes and mods are not clone of a full product. Don't get me wrong. I've certainly played my fair share of these servers and am grateful they've existed to burn my life years at a time; however, I like the idea of ephemeral things. If there was a 2 or 3 year period of my life that got devoted to playing EQ heavily and then switched to Lineage 2 for a couple years, I think that would be enough MMO addiction for a lifetime. The games would naturally die and people would move on with the memories. Private servers are necromancy and necromancy is reviled for a reason. Let the dead rest in peace.
