it's definitely possible that THJ's RMT lawsuit could bring about the end of all EQ emu's.
Private servers shouldn't exist at all imo. The fact people run entire MMO games while the IP holder is still operating is so deeply sketchy. There's been EQ, Lineage II, WoW private servers running for years and all those games still exist. Having a 3rd party make money off your product... seems insane that the whole concept hasn't been brutally shut down yet.

in a perfect world it would only be IP that is actually "abandonware" in the sense they no longer care enough to spin a server up so a video game preservation argument can be made like the numerous mmorpgs currently that can only be played due to the emu scene

There's a difference when the ip holder expressly grants permission, in the case of p99. I don't see it as being much different than id software allowing and downright encouraging modding of their games.

The difference between a cult and a religion is the level of control that it holds over you.

One could argue that a guild has some kind of control over you because of DKP you invested into it, but.... idk. That is kind of a stretch because you can always delete the guild bank and ninja loot items and leave anytime you want.

It's a community and you can leave your communities any time you want. It's really hard to do because humans are social idiots and will stay somewhere harmful if they have connections there. Like to your point about DKP, yes 100% I remained in toxic situations because I had dragon bucks left over.

wait didnt you get kicked out of your last guild on Green for toxic behavior on raids? And then realized no other guild wanted you, so you left?

listen, i agree with you about EQ for the most part. some guilds are like cults - but theres lots of normal, non-toxic players in P99 eq. they just dont post on forums.

also like 10% of each guild is hardcore p99ers that poopsock 16 hour windows and play 6+ hours a day, 7 days a week. the other 90% of the server pop is more casual.
