That is correct. The Vatican is not a religion and they were the goverment at the time of the crusades' and for power, they took as much as they could from their (decided by the goverments) enemies.

In fact, the Vatican when it came into power literally made up it's own religion to maintain a rule of law, based on Christianity and Judaism and paganism.

how is what you say any different than what I said or contradict it in any way?

In the first week of March 1095, a delegation from the Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus presented Urban with a request for help against the Turks. Pope Urban II’s response was to preach the First Crusade, starting on November 27, 1095, at the Council of Clermont in his home country of France.
