There's a short essay written by Orwell in 1942 called Pacifism and the War, which really brilliantly elucidates the problems with pacifism and asserts that any pacifist ideology is "objectively pro-fascist". "You hamper the war effort of one side," he explains, "you automatically help that of the other."

You can probably lay blame on Orwell for the neutering of every anti-war rally we've seen since World War 2. This line has been taken up and lauded by many public intellectuals of our day, and has even found a prominent home among leftists who simply can't offer up a solid refutation.
