I've actually wondered what makes an altercation an actual hate crime. When I was in the ARMY two soldiers got in a fist fight, and the black NCO who had to do the paper-work on it tried to turn it into a hate crime because the soldier who got his ass whooped was black. In reality the fight had nothing to do with race whatsoever, and the black dude actually instigated the fight. Not taking sides here, because the black dude was cool AF for the most part but chose to turn a petty squabble into a physical altercation. They both were super cool guys; the black dude officially dubbed me as black because he said I was the most ghetto white person he ever met (I'm from Appalachia), and the white guy was the least judgmental person I've ever met who would stand up for anyone who he thought was being bullied.
It ended up being one of the best street fights I've ever seen in my entire life. The black dude was like 250 pounds, and was just clobbering this 140-150 pound white dude. Blood all over the place, but the little dude hung in there, and persevered through the onslaught. At this point the big black dude was completely gassed, he couldn't even move his arms, and basically went comatose, when the little white dude got up and started throwing his knee into the black dude's face over and over and over again, leading the NCO who broke it up to believe it was a hate crime, lmao. He missed the part where the white dude was getting his ass whooped for like 10 minutes straight.
