I rather think the argument is the 'common ancestor' had offspring and as time passed each generation of offspring were very slightly more chimplike as on one side of the tree, and more and more humanlike on the other side. A 0.0005% change each generation, rather than a 100% change in a single step?

See birds outside? They came from other birds and they're only going to make more birds. See grass in your yard? It came from other grass and it will produce more grass just like it. Live in Florida and have an orange tree in your yard? It came from another orange tree just like it and guess what, it's going to produce more orange trees in the future. See rabbits hopping around your yard? They came from other rabbits and they'll produce more rabbits just like themselves. Every single living thing you see every year looks exactly the fucking same as the ones from the year before it. Never in my life have I EVER seen a living thing that appears to be evolving into something else. You sincerely have to have shit for fucking brains to believe in evolution.

We know genes can mutate, we know sexual reproduction happens and we know there are seletional pressures on organisms. Perhaps the creature lost some of the prerequisites/catalysts for the process? I.e. they tend not to sexually reproduce, have largely immutable DNA, have had stable selectional pressures, have large generational gaps or have a narrow genepool (e.g. if a species practically went extinct but recovered).
