It’s a byproduct of American individualism. We’re all the fucking same and that’s uncomfortable to recognize, so we have to focus on our differences - what makes us stand out from the rest and those people who we are not like, but not really, are bad. That’s the one good thing patriotism / nationalism has going for it.. everyone is literally under the same flag and everyone else is a communist.

Very true. My theory is US culture is attempting to combat cultural nihilism by enacting the same methodologies that Nietzsche concluded as to leading to nihilism. What's left out is the pathological shift that Heidegger introduced by undoing the Cartesian mode of "Cogito ergo sum." It's also very difficult to have successful marketing to potential consumers when they think outside of their wants and focus on their needs (see German spending habits for example and EU data laws).
