Why does Trump need so many faithful cheerleaders? I don't remember Clinton, Bush, or Obama having rallies, demanding loyalty pledges, attacking the entire media/government/world, just to bolster their fragile ego.

No, but I don't watch much TV at all. Cut the cord more than 5 or 6 years ago. Not being bombarded by commercials was worth every lost channel.
