There's nothing preventing people from logging onto the IRC channel and having the same conversations and global requests for help that you used the old global OOC channel for. We all can still do this. All it takes is people's willingness to keep an IRC window going in the background...

This was pretty much my attitude for a while. Then I was reminded that while I play EQ in maximized Windowed mode on my primary monitor and have IRC on the secondary screen, not everyone has the ability to have an adequate multitasking setup. I see people running IRC on backup computers, even mobile phones, but some people really can't simultaneously play while viewing IRC.

Nonetheless, I do hope IRC picks up.

Also, it would be nice to have a hosted WebIRC that automatically connects people to the appropriate server and channel. While my IRC client of choice (XChat) is wonderfully noobtastic, having something that people can simply click from the front page would be really nice. Most web IRC clients look like garbage, but I think Tiramisu looks particularly polished.

IRC isn't classic and should be nerfed!

IRC has been around as long as the Internet- even longer really, on BBS's.

There may not have been an "official" IRC channel for EQ, but I'm sure there were lots of them going.

Now I feel a little stupid, let me clarify that [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Chat systems LIKE IRC were around before the Internet. IRC was almost certainly built directly from one of them. Regardless, around long before EQ. I used to waste just as much time on IRC back in the early 90s as I ever did on EQ a decade later.
