Kefka did make a very impressive villain. I would have a hard time choosing between Chrono Trigger and FF3 as best console RPG. I remember buying FF3 the day it was released at Toys R Us so long ago; it was epic at the time!

Can't really go wrong with any of the following:
FF Mystic Quest
FF2
FF3
FF7
FF8
FF Tactics
Chrono Trigger
Tales of Phantasia
Lunar: Silver Star Story

I have yet to play Chrono Cross, though it looks like another awesome game. Wonder how it stacks up against Chrono Trigger?

I guess it's cool to bash FF7 because it is extremely popular. You had millions of angsty 13 year olds naming their MMO characters Sephiroth but nobody gave a rat's ass about Kefka. I'm not trying to imply popularity = quality automatically, but I really do believe Sephiroth was a far more memorable character from a far more memorable story.

That said, FFIX was my favorite. Kuja was an amalgam of Sephiroth and Kefka, Sephiroth's emo sadness QQ and Kefka's insanity. The cutscenes were extremely well done, they always gave me tingles. Garnet was a hot little piece of 16 year old ass and Vivi was a bro.

Friend of mine secured the name "Sephiroth" in vanilla on the Mannoroth server in WoW, and kept it through WotLK, where he then made...a blood elf death knight. Yeah, big surprise, eh?

FF7 had a awesome story line but the game mechanics were far behind what was happening with the RPG game world. Pretty much why SE can't make a new FF worth a damn nowa days. They always spend a lot more time/money working on the story and not the game mechanics or engine.

personally, i can forgive clunky mechanics more than i can forgive a bad story.

legend of dragoon, for example, had an epic story AND gameplay that was different from the norm.

Thought LoD had super bland storyline; history of the world was way more interesting than whatever the player was doing. Was all "look at this FMV of epic battle in flying cities against dragons and gods!! OK that's enough of that now you crawl in the ruins of that city and get flashbacks of how epic everything was while you fight hordes of monotonous goblins".

Spoiler:Rose is the Black Monster, never saw that one coming?!

I played the first Final Fantasy on my old NES and it was good but then I became sexually active during the nineties and playing eastern RPG's is pretty much anathema to humping--unless you're a pedophile or tentacle enthusiast--so I stuck to the Elder Scrolls games and used my boners for something more than masturbating. These days I don't own a single action figure, I've never watched anime and I'm not morbidly obese, so I'd say I made the right decision to skip this franchise.
