Unemployment compensation is included in the taxes one plays out of gross income. So chances are, you're not supporting anyone.

That sentence isn't grammatically correct, but I'm going to assume what you were trying to say and it's not entirely correct, unemployment is governed by stats so it largely depends on where you live. Unemployment income is taxable, but whether you get 100% of it or 60% of it due to taxes it's still free money from someone else's pockets.

I don't think a lot of people are unemployed, some just have shitty jobs.

He meant that anyone on unemployment is being paid money that was taken out of their previous paychecks (before they were unemployed) and not being paid money taken from other tax payers. When you have a job you pay taxes from your OWN paycheck towards unemployment benefits and I'm fairly certain your employer pays into it as well for each employee. To get unemployment benefits in new york you must have atleast held a job for over 12-18 months prior to applying and not have been fired. Your weekly unemployment checks wind up being 50% of your average weekly salary that you received from your last job.

Also -- They offer unemployment benefits to full time college students, which is sweet. Going to school and getting paid for it is awesome. Btw -- Hurray for socialist government policies!

Yes, the employer generally does pay into it when a former employee goes on unemployment. There are like ~10 different things that affect how much the employer actually pays, but the big ones are length of employment, wages earned, and current number of employees. Small businesses, like the one I run, get hit especially hard when former workers file for unemployment.

It was just a snarky retort to a ridiculous statement.
