red 69 was fun as hell imo
even with the insanely low pop.. u get 50 quite easily, gear up faster -- pvp all the time over solb, etc ... loved it when it had ~50... all it needed was anti-hack code, advertising and it would be golden

Kings and Bandits was a classic pvp server made by Image and Devnoob. They had 4 teams and you would get coins for pvp kills which you could use to buy items. For example, you could buy a guise for 2 coins.

I am not sure what ani-hack code they had but I know they did catch people who cheated/hacked. Also, there was ALWAYS pvp. We used to just port from zone to zone looking for pvp and spent a good amount of time fending off people who would train us trying to kill vox/naggy. Good times were had...especially when darksinga would try to train us in fear and we would just /target darksinga and send in blinding horses. The QQ that followed was funny.

It wasn't classic at all. Spells file exploits were still possible. Factions were beyond screwed up. Pathing was awful. The server looked like no work was put into it at all.

Never came across any hacks and those who did cheat were banned.
How did they catch them? Especially with something like ShowEQ, how would they know the person was using it? Only p99 has had any reliable level of cheat detection.

I was actually at the top of the leaderboard on that server until well after I quit. I had only one pvp death (that's when I quit).

It seems that people really wanted a classic server with good exp etc. What boggles my mind is that we already had this in K&B and RED69. You had classic with devs who were working on content daily and would respond fast to posts. Granted K&B had a small twist, but they had leader boards, rewards for pvp and teams. I think it would have been better if it were just a modified good vs evil instead of 4 teams.

If people stuck around, we would have had Kunark and Velious content by now and a huge population. Other than things like Nexus being in the game and translocators, why did people turn their back on the server?
K&B was destined to fail because of the asshats running the server. Both of them were exiled from EQEmu because of their entitled, better-than-thou behavior.

Red69, if I recall correctly, was put up by Freakyuno. He had no experience running an EQ server, much less a PVP server. He's a good guy, but it didn't take him long to fold his cards and pop up a WOW emu instead.

Red99, on the other hand, is being run by the staff that has the best record for running a classic server. They have all of the research done on what should be in and what shouldn't - unlike some shitty reincarnation of a pvp server using the horribly flawed VZTZ database and coding.

But really, what it comes down to despite the previous points, is that the pvp community here will NEVER be happy. Period. They'd rather bitch about every single aspect of a server that they play on for free, quit playing, then troll the rest of the people that choose to keep playing and/or the staff running the server.

Kings and Bandits had cheat PREVENTION, not so much DETECTION. They used a modified eqgame.exe (illegal, btw) to break MQ2 from being able to hook into the client. And at some point, they also insta-banned anyone that tried connecting to their shitty server if they didn't have an eqgame.exe that matched theirs.

For those interested in the PvE mob control route, this remains the choice of server. Kunark eventually will pop it up because there will be world PvP and ganking again.
If Red99 stayed even in terms of expansion progression with P99, it would definitely do better. A lot of blue players would rather have the option to fight over raid targets rather than deal with the fucked up care bear system on P99. But being that they get to raid in Kunark on P99 still, most wont make that switch.

Not to mention the itemization gets a lot better in Kunark. Monks with Ton Po's or Tstaff and fungi tunic? Oh snap, shit just got real. And as much as I hate to detract from the classic experience at all, xp should be bumped a bit. Especially for Kunark, where 50-60 is like pulling teeth.

The hotzone idea someone brought up would be neat to inspire more concentrated pvping. Having like 1.5x - 2x xp rates on weekends would probably get the server pop up as well.

Rust1d?: You make one of these threads like every 2 months, and it's obvious that you are one of the two devs (either devnoob or image).

I have already responded to this before but Ill do so again

1.) The timing on "red69" could not have been any worse -- coming after the shutdown of Secrets little VZTZ clone, and prior to the launch of the looming red99. Most players were going to take a pass on your server and wait for red99 which was being developed by the main eqemu guy (Rogean) who had a track record of professionalism and stability compared to other "running this off a spare box out of my garage" sandbox devs who had lesser resources and reputation.

2.) You named it "red69". Unless you were trying to attract 12 year olds who still think the 69 number is hilarious + outrageous, all this did was make you look even less legit in light of the upcoming red99.
For naming convention: VZTZ == good. Guild Wars == good. Red69 == bad.

3.) K&B was plainly custom. When you make the choice to go custom, you say goodbye to a huge % of your potential players. I think custom servers can work but it's a much higher mountain to climb that takes a longer time and word of mouth from players convincing other players that this non-classic server is worth playing and not just some hacky aimless crap a bored CS major cobbled together. I empathize with all the guys trying to make custom servers work (Secrets included) but it's a lot harder to sell on people. Most just want the classic EQ they remember.
