I share a plan with a family member, but my data is separate. I live out in the boonies (well, boonies for me anyway... kind of a city dweller-type personally) and Sprint gets no service here. Also not sure if my phone will support it?

Andriods all should work with a free app for USB tether. You would need to grant yourself Admin/Superuser permissions to use the hotspot tether without the increased data charges.

My phone is an earlier type smartphone. I haven't upgraded to a droid or iPhone yet... mostly because I have 3 children and a touch screen scares the daylights out of me :P
