Always used "char" as an abbreviation for character. It's just as short as toon but actually makes sense.

Interesting question. A few minutes of googling, and the earliest reference I have found to "toon" is from a post on Alla's in May, 2004. WoW was released 6 months later in November.

The biggest EQ mystery to me was everyone who would denote a smiley with just a closed parenthesis. I've never seen it outside of EQ.

The only thing I can think of is that it grew out of the fact that if you just typed "[You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]" it would become an emote:

Soandso )

But that doesn't completely explain why people would do it in the middle of sentences.

the chat server didn't process [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] normally for whatever reason. All of your [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]s looked like )s to the casual observer.
