I don't understand why bid updates exempt one from the bumping rules. It would be as easy to use edits for current bids

Perhaps it's the intent behind the post. Also, updating for bids let everyone know that is currently bidding that a new bid has been placed, thus facilitating the bidding.

Also, free bump for Bob.
