True, and part of the fun is earning your own gear as you go.
Which is why when I 'twink' an alt, I typically only do Fungi + Haste item + weapon and maybe some HP rings. Everything else I get as I go.

I am on the Blue server. I've had every class under the sun on live. I have been devoted to each of them at the time they held my interest. I don't recall where I read that rangers don't do so well on emu servers, it was probably just an opinion I should not have paid attention to. I have not found my Ranger to be a liability in any way and I'm sure I won't. I found a great guild and they have donated gear to me that should hold me for quite a while.

Rangers are awesome. I just rolled a new one as my first character on green myself. One of my very favorite classes.

My first char was a ranger as well. It’s a fairly hard class to solo without decent gear. Luckily a lot of good stuff is dirt cheap these days (silver swiftblade is basically free). I soloed to 60 without a fungi, woodsman staff to 58. I invested in a token bracer which really helped once I was done snare/fearing animals to 49. Grobb and HK bow-rooting stuff dead.
I’d keep the faith or if you are concerned make a necro as your first class to like 40 (or will go fairly quick). Then dump the savings into the ranger. Rangers get hate here because they aren’t Luclin-good. Also a lot of tropes that are funny but totally accurate. With gear they do solid damage, they are extremely flexible and fun if you practice the skills. Getting groups is a chore compared to a rogue but the journey is worth it.
