The transparent UI existed during classic with more limitations. The Freeport picture shows an earlier iteration, when the windows couldn't be moved. You can see the grab handles in the corners on the GFay picture. Those were added in late Sep. 2000. And 10 hot buttons came in Nov. 2000.

Honestly I don't remember, I would assume it indicates leader but in one shot there's no yellow name (in the unfull group one).

And yeah, I think it's a common misconception that original classic only had the tiny boxed-in graphical UI; you could always press f10 to toggle to the fullscreen with line boxes view, it was just extremely limited but felt much less claustrophobic.

However given the hardware of the time, I do remember the framerate being a lot better in the tiny version, cause it had less to redraw each frame.

I think the person who formed the group has yellow name. Don't remember 100%.
