Pvp in EQ is lame, hope that helps. If it was good red would have more then a 50man pop. Consider playing almost any mmo with pvp.

I was wondering about this as well

How balanced is EQ pvp? I took a shaman to around 40ish on Sullon Zek launch but barely remember it

1v1? Dog shit for most of the classes. You can negate some of the class balance issues with consumables/clickies but that also creates other issues where you can't really do much without seeking out of class assistance via items. So some classes will just be good with no added effort while others need to sink in plat and time to stand a chance. When you are in corpse recovery mode it gets even worse as quite a few classes can't do much of anything while naked while the classes that are naturally good can still put up a fight or avoid them altogether.

Group vs Group can actually quite good, but it also depends on composition, gear, and skill. If both groups are relatively equal then the fight is good.

Raid vs Raid is a shit show but also incredibly fun. Sometimes you rolled the other side and it was done with while other times you get locked into a fight that spans multiple hours and zones.

Skill level often trumps gear but it requires a deeper understanding of the game. A group of pvp vets could reroll and would absolutely destroy any level appropriate group they came across. There are probably some long time players that could 1v2,3,4,5, or even 6 against low skill/beginner players. So just like with PvE there is room for some extreme skill expression.

Overall its fine but somewhat difficult for people to get into. EQ also being a 24/7 PvP game makes it more difficult for more casual players to get into. The success that WoW had with its PvP servers was largely due to being able to step outside of it for a bit and not having to worry about every player you saw. Even though you could gank and corpse camp people 40 levels below you it didn't stop people from being able to go to capital cities, dungeons, or raids to get away from it. This is probably why people enjoyed the Teams servers so much. You could roll whatever the biggest faction was and thus negate most of the anxiety. On Sullon Zek the game played out a lot like WoW did if you played Evil, you could safely sit around your cities, run dungeons, and even sometimes raid without having to deal with PvP. You were free to enjoy most of the PvE aspects of the game while also dipping into PvP when you felt like it. Not to say that Good and Neutrals didn't try their best but they were so outnumbered that some other group or groups would handle them while you sat at your camp collecting pixels.

This.

This is precisely why Vallon Zek is so legendary in EQ lore for having an amazing community.

Teams made for a memorable experience, no relationships were disposable. We came to respect the enemy, and depend on our teammates. The raid scene was still wide enough that anyone could compete. Though xteamers kinda ruined it.

Still, good times.
