Depends on the class. Enchanter research is cake and some of the spells sell pretty well.
Wizard research is spotty because some of the low level runes are reused, so you may have to get friends/alts to help farm them. Pretty much all of the kite/AE spells are research only, so that makes it somewhat important, but after level 50, the only spell worthwhile is no drop when researched, but also drops from Vox, so it's a strange situation. Overall, it doesn't really matter for a wiz. Mages and Necros need research for pets before level 50, but it's not really important otherwise.

Hello!
So I just trained my mage research from 0 to 160 from the trainer. It took about 1.3k plat to do so. This was after many days looking for the level 49 pets. I would say unless you are going to be farming mats at higher level to make spells people are looking for its not worth it. I mean after I got the level 54 water pet I dont use the level 49 pets much anyways and really the only one I do use from time to time is the earth pet and thats vendor bought. One thing I did do was save all of the research only pet materials as I was leveling so I will be able to recover some of the plat I dumped into training. Now if you like hunting out and farming research mats then I would go for it. I am always checking vendors for mage research mats. For instance if I see Words of Bondage in EC for 50 plat I can take that make a level 49 pet and sell it for 200 to 300 plat! I guess in a nut shell if its something you would enjoy doing at higher level then go for it! I enjoy it.

On caster I've spent plat to train Research at the GM as high as possible.
It's easier and faster. All tradeskills are a platsink of course but you can generate some income selling spells. That will recoop your investment.

It’s gonna be a slog. Either you burn words or regs on practice. Either way you have to be a fastidious collector.
Paying the trainer is a lot of plat but whether blue or green fine steel sells for the same amount. The only class that probably makes sense to train up (vs buy the researched 49 spells) is a Wiz since IC research is no-drop; the only droppable version comes from Vox. Ice Comet and Super Nova are amazing on green and still hold up fairly well post 50. Note: I don’t know the resale profit on spells with Green server. Depending on that it may make sense to just train up, make DMF and what not, and sell for profit. Still less annoying than grinding it up naturally

I remember dropping about 2k plat in total to train my Wiz research into the 180s for Ice Comet. You can farm up 2k plat about 10x faster and easier than you can skill up research with combines.
It's really a no-brainer. There is literally no scenario in which trying to skill up research manually makes sense over just using the trainer. Even on a brand new server like Green at launch you would be better off just powering through levels with the spells you have available. You can make so much more plat at high levels that you can then easily afford trainer skill points AND buying the research mats you need from other players for your combines.
