The game was much darker..... I remember hiding at inn 1 in EC, not being able to see very far, and being afraid of the ambient sounds : D Also itmes that gave off light were slightly useful. I have noticed, though, that when I run eqemu it turns my monitor's brightness up. First noticed this when I went to play minecraft and could see well at night. I have to restart my comp to get the regular brightness, happens on every computer Ive played on.
This glitch has been around in EQ for years. Its due to the way EQ handles gamma adjustment and the player not properly closing the client. I use to have this happen to me constantly when I would just X out of the game , however I've never had this happen doing a /camp desktop.

This. For real. That tunnel hated me.

I remember it being near impossible to get out of Surefall Glade at night as a human without a light source. As a complete newb, I didn't realize that Druids could summon a light source at level one. I guess there was a reason they put that in so early.

Yeah the wide range of gamma correction really leaves no excuse not to see well at night.

However I have actually gotten used to playing the game without the added gamma. The shift in brightness in overall monitor brightness really annoys me, as I often like to watch Netflix in the background and this gamma shift destroys the image quality. Not to mention I enjoy the deeper contrast in EQ, even the dark zones. It adds some immersion back into the mix!

I find it strange though that 0% gamma isn't the same as "off" but actually SUBTRACTS gamma from the game and entire desktop. It seems to me like 26% or so makes my background desktop appear normal.

Back when eq came out nobody really cared about gamma correction really. It just meant "brighter", but games nowadays try to match the gamma curve of monitors and tvs. They are mostly the same, though older macs are different.

It seems like as a human when I first log in I sometimes get the original EQ darkness, then when the next hour tics over it goes sort of half ultravision.

I agree for sure about the richness of the colors as a human.

More info on games and gamma if you are curious:
