Tip for a brand new necro? Roll up an alt now and start collecting necro items for your Iksar necro when Kunark is released.
I would have by far preferred an Iksar, that's the only necro I ever played and they are the best imo. However, I'm not waiting almost a year to play a necro either [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I think there is too much stress on getting 50% dam. For white and yellow cons, ok, you're going in full fangs out and are dropping everything on them that you can, since you're going to use a lot of mana regardless, might as well go all in and make sure you get 50%. But with blue cons I always do what I call (capitalized of course) the Fastest Sustainable Kill Rate where I try to find the best combination of pet and spell dam to kill with as little downtime as possible and not worry as much about doing 50%.

I find that does the best for me when I'm trying to exp. But like someone upstream said, that's also less of an issue from mid 20s on, your spells do relatively more dam and you're in more zones where everything is agro so you'll tend to park your pet somewhere and will be dragging snared mobs some distance before your pet even has a chance.

The first 11 levels are tough, level 12 you start to feel your power a bit more.

Also, for your pets... if you can find a halberd, scythe or 2h sword early on - that'll help your pet's dps <3

Read the pet guide on the wiki. Then re-read it.

Read this, it's basically the necro bible:

Also, how hard is it to deal 50% dmg to a mob so you get full exp?
If you're going to be killing the same type of mob for a long time (treants, city guards etc) take the time to figure out exactly how little mana you can use to get a mob to < 50% health. Then, in future fights, cast those dots and send your pet, but don't kill the mob until all of your dots have worn off. This is the most efficient way to max the value of your pet without worrying about losing xp to it.

For example, for hill giants:
Turn pet taunt off. Pull with boil blood (longest duration), pull it to where you want it, send pet, wait for pet to take aggro, cast dooming darkness, cast venom of the snake to pull aggro off pet and aggro kite it, cast vampire dot to regain lost hp from lich form. With full duration dooming darkness, boil blood, venom of the snake, and vampire dot you should have done just over 50% damage. By that time the (unhasted) pet should have it down to ~15-20% hp so let the pet finish it off but not before boil blood runs out.
