New names also got sent to online GMs and Guides to approve, via a screen overlay. You could click Accept or Decline. So there was a human element filtering the names too.

I had that suspicion. Back on live when my main server was down for some reason and I rolled a fresh character on some random server, my names were rejected for like 10 mins straight, even the name generator names. Out of frustration I tried something like "Fukyougms" and it was accepted.

As soon as I loaded into game I was summoned to the GM jail box and lectured for like 5 mins, lol.

I grouped with someone once whose first name was completely uncapitalized. No capital first letter. Can’t remember the exact name but they had no idea how it happened.

People got in a lot of trouble for that, there was a trick to it on the character creation screen.

[Secrets]

The titanium client has a bug in it where you could press backspace on the character creation screen (without any third party programs) right after the first character after typing your full name and you could get the game to accept 3-letter names as well as non-capitalized names.

It's been fixed for years. P99 was one of the first servers to fix it, but those characters remain. If you see one, do your civic duty and petition them.
