That's his gamma or screenshot software. Nothing in this client is that dark, even if you're human/erudite/barbarian.

This must have something to do with pet level, because I've been soloing ghouls from 18-21 on my Necro and the pet hasn't had any trouble doing damage with rusty weapons.

IIRC lvl 16+ pets have magic fists so they would be able to hit.

Just go to EC tunnel and plead poverty or go there with barely any equipment and wait around. Eventually someone will come up to you and offer you a spare weapon from Kunark or Velious.
