i dunno they want to join a lvl 1 group of newbies full of as much copper as the game limit lets them and do a /split 0 0 0 320000000000000 and watch everyone instantly die?

Poor analogy. It's more like already owning 12 different kinds of breweries and deciding to purchase an established vineyard in Napa Valley. You don't buy the manastone for a single consumption - you buy it for the utility it provides that can be found basically NOWHERE ELSE for certain classes. It's in no way a "novelty" item.
