Until the server is patched, the hammer will be controllable. It would be unwise to use it, considering that it's abusing a bug. After the patch it will not be controllable except for /pet go away.

Can you use it on one mob, but then tell it to go away? Or is that still a suspendable offense?

This should be fixed, but you will need to be standing within 100 units for the pet to attack your target for right now.
