This is my favorite version of that song actually, because this guy's dynamics are fucking amazing. Listen to this and that john butler guy who you posted, see the difference.

John Williams

Its hard to say "Best" because music is subjective and style is a big factor so I'll just say my favorites as of this moment are...

Buddy Guy for blues guitarist. Michael Romeo for progressive rock.

oh, and Michael Angelo Batio for laughs.

The truth is,

John Pettruci isn't just pro at guitar. He writes beautiful music. Although this was hard for me to decide from. Such as Satriani , Hendrix, Vai , etc I feel Pettruci style is very unique.
If we're going with not only being a pro-guitarist but also a poet, how can we forget Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, George Harrison from the Beatles (rhythm not lead), and Clapton? Let's be honest, Jimi is a phenomenal guitarist, but I'd turn my head a bit before I called it poetic.

Vaughn is a definite.

Dream Theater would be a much better band if they weren't so gay. Petrucci is damn good, a great gear man, but I'm sorry, the singer from Dream Theater makes me want to kill the whole band.

Best Live Guitarist: Shawn Lane, specifically his work with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe.

Check out Hellborg Lane and Sipe - Temporal Analogues of Paradise

Other Favorite Guitarists:
Jason Becker
David Gilmour
Jimmy Page
SRV
Jimmy Hendricks
Randy Rhoads
Clapton (with Derek and the Dominos and Cream)
Zappa
Warren Haynes (of Gov't Mule and now The Allman Brothers Band)
Jerry Garcia
Dimebag
Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam, yuk yuk)
Jonny Greenwood, back when he used to rock (Pablo Honey through Ok Computer, pretty much)
Steve Winwood
Paul Gilbert

To me playing the (electric) guitar is 25% style, 25% noise, 25% music, and 25% heart.

I have to study for a midterm but I hope we can keep this thread going as it is awesome!

Personally, I never understood the appeal towards the Beetles, musically.

Bands like The Animals and The Who had a much more technical sound (in my opinion)
