That would require a 3rd person. When I did it, I had enough time to kill Pegleg, get gem, gate, turn in, get port and get a 2nd gem from the spirit. When I came back Pegleg would be ready to die again.
TL;DR If you are efficient you can get 2 gems per spirit/Pegleg kill.

Ok, good to know about the Freeport step, especially for non-barbarians, but what about the comments in some commentaries online that some steps can be skipped? I get the faction issues, but as I read it each step requires a component received in the prior step, so how can you "skip" a step?

All previous components received are irrelevant at the fear stage; that is simply the case of killing a golem, which spawns a mob that drops the single item you need for the final hand ins.
To complete the final hand ins there is a pre-requisite mount of xp, so you can rinse/repeat early stages of the quest until you have accumulated sufficient faction to straight out do the iksar child's tear part. Frankly, the shield is not terribad while levelling up and the boots are fantastic. Hole is a fun zone with great xp. You'll probably have more funs doing the entire quest. Maybe skip the waiting to be eaten by sharks bit in erud xing.

SoW boots are a must I did it normally for nostalgia sake up through that step, then just spent my 40s in CoM and repeated the 6 pages step, was faction capped at 47.
