Why did 'nub' catch on when 'newb' and 'noob' are such sensible alternatives?

I just like to mix it up sometimes. I find myself pronouncing (with that little voice inside my head that I hear when I read/write/type) nub, newb, and noob differently. Nubb, niewb, and noob.
