Definitely always nice to have shinier armor, but don't let bronze make you feel less useful in a group. No matter what armor you're wearing, you still heal for the same amount. Having some extra max mana really only helps if shit hits the fan and you have to burn a full mana bar - strength shouldn't come into play at all for grouping, othe than hauling loot. If you're having trouble carrying stuff, then as painful as it may sound, switch back to banded for some pieces to lighten the load. Being under 75 agi from encumbrance will be a bigger hit to your AC than wearing banded instead of bronze.
That said, if you want shinier armor w/o spending a fortune, try questing your Sol Ro armor pieces (as suggested above). If you have a druid/wizard friend to help with travel they shouldn't take too long, and it's a fun/mostly free option.

Most groups are grateful to have a cleric, whatever they're wearing

If you don't have any +mana items anyway it may be worth swapping some bronze slots out for mesh? Reasonable AC, very low weight and drops pretty frequently in guk.
As a cleric your real equipment is your spell book. | ||

AC helps you survive some unwanted mob attention but it do not help at all with the healing itself, most party don't care about your AC as long as you manage not to die too frequently, and honestly if that is the case, you should be the one to frown on the group with so poor tanking/CC...

In fairness, some groups the cleric has to manage some of the CC, help the tanks with roots and so on. You can't guarantee optimal group composition while levelling up.

Could anyone tell me how to raise blacksmithing over 235 please? Thank you.

Is the fine splinted cloak trivial? I think that one will take you to 242.
Otherwise the only way to get it past that is cultural. If you're a dwarf, look here. I think that one is the highest of all the cultural sets.
