For those saying to change compatibility settings and run as administrator: Do you mean the everquest.exe? because I can't change compatibility settings for Project1999.bat and when I run it as administrator, I just get an error "Windows could not find eqgame".

You change compatibility settings on an executable. If you have a .bat that references or calls a .exe, that is ok, but if you are going to try and mess with compatibility, it's with the .exe.

I had this error and the only thing that resolved it was a fresh install.

After I got it working, I made a backup of my EQ directory. I was good for a long time and this reared it's ugly head again last month. Deleted current EQ directory, copied over old EQ directory, voila problem solved for me.

Changing compatibility, messing with settings, etc did nothing for me. Reinstall, get it working, and back it up.

Thank you to everyone who helped! If anyone runs into my chain of problems, run compatability mode for eqgame not everquest.exe.

After struggling all day to get this working and reading through all kinds of solutions I finally managed it. I'm assuming this will solve the problem for at least a few others also so I figured I'd post what I did:

Move eq folder our of program files (if you've located it there during installation)
Change resolution in eqclient.ini to match screen resolution
right click eqgame.exe and run in xp compatibility mode
start game
and voila..

I'm guessing a lot of people quickly figured this out but I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to pc's so...for you other noobs, hope it helps!
