Those updates were for mostly for Xbox One, IIRC. They just got bundled into the generic Microsoft T&C. I know for a fact that the 'unauthorised hardware' thing was simply about Xbox hardware, while the pirate software was only for Microsoft software.
The privacy concerns are exaggerated, but are mostly true. They're also easy enough to fix with the "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" third-party software. What people are ignoring is that Windows 10 is free for a good reason. It's nothing to do with spyware and everything to do with microtransactions. Why charge $200 for an OS when you can charge them $10 a shot for 25 apps which they were expecting to get for free? Quote:

I have been rolling with XP on most my machines, but found VGO emu requires .NET 4.52. And so am looking to upgrade to win7.
Is windows the only option for most major PC games, or can you finagle hem to work on Linux? I've heard of Wine, but am unfamiliar with how it works. Is it essentially a windows emulator? | ||

That said, I think you'll get more games running on Ubuntu (or Mint or half a dozen other Linux distributions) than you will under Windows XP. Wine (technically WINE -> Wine Is Not Emulation) is just a Linux program which fakes a windows environment well enough for most older games. Everquest, for example, runs very well under Wine. Some people need to set processor affinities, but that's actually easier than it sounds. The big thing to remember with Wine is that they actually have >a database of games< on their site where people have written notes on which games run, how well they run and any Linux-specific bugs. If you had concerns about a specific game, check the database. Even when there are bugs, people write about how to work around them. If you can burn a DVD, you can try many of the Linux distributions without even needing to install. They won't run as fast, but they will give a you a taste of how easy it will be to adapt. I recommend >64-bit Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition< unless you still have a single-core PC, but everyone has their own preferences.

Thanks Ments! Is there a way to make .NET 4.5 work with WINE, or would I have to actually use windows for that? I'll check out the Mint Cinnamon that you suggested. I've a phenom 9950, so I think my hardware is ok (maybe a couple generations behind) I've just stuck with XP because it worked and I am familiar with it ^^
