I'm interested to see the effect this really has. From what I can tell, enough personal wealth and access to high-end Kunark gear already allows players to make themselves almost invulnerable to spells.

Lots of Velious stuff has Magic Resist. I've been parsing through the new gear on the wiki and it seems like even solo farmers (not raid forces) will be able to collect a lot individual pieces to seriously pump up defenses against spells.

It seems the age of the Melee is approaching.

I think it really depends on what you are after. I have a cleric main because I used to love my cleric playing PvE in fennin back in the early days. It turns out to be real fun here as well. I don't care about getting YT or a good ratio on the leaderboards. Being able to heal, cure, etc in PvP is satisfying. The appreciation from those I assist is worth more to me.

So if you want to get lots of kills solo or be a part of a team makes a big impact on your descision. If you want to focus on PvP during PvE events also matters. If you want lootz you must consider guild politics.
