I can only speak from a new players vantage and a lone player up to mid levels.
Groups tend to make up of whatever is available and you will have some very nonstandard groups. Bard/monk/pet tanks, nero healers, etc. Real tanks seem to be the most scarce, then non-monk mêlée, followed by everything else. Anything that can solo well is very represented. The best part about playing a duo is you always have someone that can bind of one of you plays a mêlée, which can remove the added hassle of travelling to a nee places. Also dungeons are crazy insane experience. Too fast actually, but few complain.

Can't believe no one mentioned enchanter.
Clerics can heal better than anyone, so that's your strength up through late game. Probably through your 20s, the cleric can serve as a passable tank as well, and with stuns will have no problem keeping aggro if he wants it. That opens up every melee path to you. Or, as noted, you could have a pet take damage. For 40+ dungeon content, Cleric/Enchanter is arguably the best duo in the game. Between CH, Rez, and cleric buffs, and enchanter charm/mana regen/haste/slow, you two are a machine. Most melee/priest duos tend to use a shaman instead of a cleric, because of access to slows and haste, as well as shaman buffs, epic dot, pet dps, and canni for regen. Cleric and a melee would work, just not as well as a shaman/melee combo. IE, much more downtime, and more limited mob selection. Shaman and Cleric don't stack well because you lack dps. Sure, with slow and complete heal, nothing will kill you easily....but you've got no real crowd control, and no real dps. So if your brother plans to stick with a dwarf cleric, and you are flexible, I'd recommend thinking about enchanter > necro > mage > bard, which all have more interesting DPS options. Or even druid if you plan to stay outdoors.
