It was extremely common in the early days of the game, that as a caster class, you would have cloth armor in most slots, and maybe you had a cracked staff or snake fang as a weapon, and that was a lot of players the norm. And then you get past level 10 and you start to accumulate some plat, and other players, who are more advanced than you, have hunted down some treasure, and maybe you can afford to buy some of the stuff they don't want. So by lvl 15 or so, you also one or two nice starting items.
Then by lvl 20 to 30, you are starting to hunt places that drop are improvements on the cloth armor, so that starts to get added to the mix. And then you progress even further, and all that cloth is gone, and you have either bought some nice stuff, or gone and got lucky and got it in a group yourself. Before you know it, it is you are who are selling a not bad first item to a level 12 character. That's eq. Multiply that simple story times for a few gigaflops and you got the crazy world of p99. It's exactly the same, but with electrolytes.

Reiterating what sox7d said, EQ is a very different game. Much of it's demise was that it started to become like WoW and newer MMOs.
There are quests, which can be cryptic and run you all over Norrath. There is also a lot of lore if you bother to pay attention. Old EQ is a very rich game. That's why people are here. It is not about leveling - it's about the gaming experience - the groups, epic trains, raid wipes, and Griffon to tunnel shouts. It's also about getting those rare items - fungi tunics, jboots, epic weapons, etc. It also has a rich tradeskill system that was mostly discovered by trial and error. There are a lot of mini-games - corpse runs, getting through Kithicor at night, evading hazards in EC. EQ is nothing like wow. It is an experience that will challenge you at every step and make you laugh along the way.

Stein of Moggok quest. An easy quest to do as a DE ench. And you can do it at low level too. This is a nice quest to do and yields a good item, I also like to quest my gear instead of buying it. This is a good intro into quests for gear in the game. There is even a section in this walk through specifically for DE.

Edit: Also you will want a port up to toxilla but keep your bind in neriak. Be super careful about having illusion on in any city (other than oggok) and always have invis on top of that until you are at whatever npc or location you need to be for a turn in or whatever. If you crash in the middle of qeynos without invis on you may log back in only to get the crap kicked out of you by a guard. Also its not a bad idea to do the quest naked the first time and just bring enough cash for the port to tox and a couple extra platinum for buying stuff that way if something goes wrong you won't loose everything.

Also, I hope you made your ench Agnostic. If you follow Innoruk or something there are NPCs that see your religion regardless of any illusion you have on and will still attack you.
