A decent number of free MUDs (Aardwolf being a great example) post exactly why someone was banned.
They're allowed to reroll on the server, but their main character and any other characters involved are banned as well as made public. There's a history too. A Legends of Kesmai emulation server I used to play on back in the day also has an entire section devoted to Crime and Punishment (except bannable offenses were permabans with no chance to reroll). OGame (a freemium browser based game) also publishes crimes and punishments. It doesn't make much sense to me to not publicize this information. I feel like its an overall boon to the community to be regularly reminded that the staff are watching. Instead of what I understand red had been like for such a long time where everyone crapped on the rules because nobody was ever punished in any significant manner.
