I'm kinda sad now, the armor quest rewards aren't that stellar . . . they have a shitload of AC but here that doesn't particularly matter. Thoughts?

Oh trust me you will Kill for AC in Velious. AC is not perfect here by any means, but above level 45 it DOES matter. Mobs hit for a ton in Velious and AC helps you big time for that.
