could try playing a battle priest role(shaman). can solo alot and arent that dependant on gear. shm are more fun twinked, but that applies to most classes. its not mana efficient, but its fun mixing melee and spells...wackin mobs with a big stick.
Necro are the best solo class, but sounds like that wont fit you. imo they are best offensive class(for sustained damage) in original eq, but utterly dull to play, as are all silk robe classes.

not into kiting, then ranger/sk are out. untwinked pally would be slow to lvl up.
