Pull that cable first, and see what it does.

just make sure you power down the tv box like a modem, so it can refresh itself.

Is cable an absolute necessity (versus on-demand streaming services via Apple TV, etc.)?

It sounds like your "satellite" unit is requiring a lot more from the internet than just basic patches or guide information (and frankly, if it's "satellite", why does it need the internet at all)? You are paying for that service… demand another way. Explain to them that if they can't deliver 100% of the service through the satellite that you are paying for (and not from your internet connection supplied by a 3rd party) that you will no longer be a customer. Pretty sure if you review your contract that they're at fault with this questionable activity.

That said, you may want to review your download speeds with something like Speedtest.net. If you are getting low speeds you're going to have issues when sharing the connection for various media types constantly.

Thanks for the help guys, we had just had this installed on saturday and I called them up this morning to explain the situation. Apparently there is a 48 hour period where the box is continually downloading guide information etc, hopped on game this morning and its running smooth again.

You're running fine after the initial download period? Or after you yanked the cable? Hopefully if you lose your internet and/or power outage that the box doesn't have to redownload all new information and stores it physically for a time period.

Fine after initial download, box showed it was done after about 20 minutes after initial install but apparently it keeps downloading guide info in the background for up to 48 hours.
