Not even a contest once you've listened to it: Chrono Cross.
Yasunori Mitsuda was not originally in music, but threatened to quit Squaresoft if he was not put on making the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger. The music in Chrono Trigger, however, was limited to the Super Nintendo, so he worked within very specific constraints. He also ended up doing the music for Xenogears. However, When it came to Chrono Cross we are talking Playstation 1, and Yasunori's imagination was able to be fully realized in his masterpiece. While Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is undeniably great, Mitsuda's music was limited by the hardware of the time. With Chrono Cross, he was able to go all out, and do exactly what he wished. For this reason, and the beauty of the songs for this game, that I put this game slightly higher than Chrono Trigger, and put Mitsuda at the top of game soundtracks, followed by Uematsu (Final Fantasy - Finished a couple tracks for Chrono Trigger) and Yamaoka (Silent Hill 2). It mixes a great deal of strings with more gamelan styles, to make something that is truly the greatest sound track ever created. Regardless of whether you liked Chrono Cross, one should respect the work Mitsuda put into this. So, a few of the 75ish tracks that make up the Chrono Cross soundtrack, in all its' majesty: Time's Scar - Intro. Life - The recombination of the shattered elements to purge the Time Devourer, and sever it from Schala. The Chronopolis - The Time Research center from 2300 A.D. thrown back in time that rewrote history, controlled by the devious AI: FATE. Dreamwatch of Time - Cutscene music to Serge and Kid ascending to assault Terra Tower. - If you don't listen to any other, listen to this one. Frozen Time - I truly have no idea where this song is in the game. Dreams of the Shore Near Another World - Exploring a different world from the one the main character is from. Forest of Cutting Shadows - Exploring a dark and mysterious forest. Chronomantique - Sailing about the world. Dead Sea - Exploring a tumultuous ocean of shattered ruins that is suspended in time, isolated from the rest of the world. Magical Dreamers - Song played by Nikki in his rock show. People Imprisoned By Destiny - Serge discovers he is the cause for the suffering and destruction of an entire existence, their souls pointing out what he has done. Jellyfish Sea - Under the ocean, they search for the source of a mysterious light. Radical Dreamers - Outro. | ||
