Also Rome was really good. I liked it more than Spartacus. If you have netflix The IT Crowd, House of Cards, and Come Fly with Me are all pretty good. Finally, I have a love-hate relationship with the West Wing. At times it is amazing, followed by 1-6 episodes of boring.

Surprisingly, you're getting some solid suggestions here. If it's on HBO, Showtime, AMC, or FX it's worth a look. Carnivale was an awesome, albeit short-lived (two seasons) series on HBO. Still one of my favorites.
But if you've got a Netflix subscription, you can get on right now and set yourself up with The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, and Hell on Wheels to keep you busy for a while. I think someone even suggested those exact three already. | ||

If you're into SciFi
Star Trek (I've included a recommended starter episode in each series) Star Trek: The Original Series (not even joking) for nostalgia, background, and more -- episode: the city on the edge of forever, shore leave, trouble with tribbles, the corbomite maneuver Star Trek: The Next Generation for philosophy, strategy, dialogue, introspection, and idealism -- episode: lower decks, first contact, the inner light Star Trek: Deep Space 9 for politics, seediness, backstabbing, reality, camaraderie, and lies (oh and lots of mirror . . heh) - and s38! -- episode: the visitor, progress [the episode that gave my druid his name!] Star Trek: Voyager [precursor: the doctor is the best part of this series] for technobabble, captain overmanagement, the worst vulcan, and a retarded crew -- episode: death wish Star Trek: Enterprise (better than people say it is, especially end of season 1 to the end of season 2) [ugh time war] for a crew made of plastic and hollywood, modern sparklies, shiny sets, and a true-to-form imagining of pre-kirk star trek -- episode: the andorian incident, dear doctor, carbon creek, dead stop ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Firefly (obviously) -- only 14 eps, extremely immersive, starts up quick ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battle Star Galactica (all along the watch towers!) -- one of the most intense and interesting first episodes in a series i've ever seen -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
