Can't really agree with you there. Things like sanity and normalcy are social constructs. I think eating fast food and driving cars are absolutely insane behavior, but I'm obviously the exception in American culture. A significant number of you probably drove for fast food tonight, risking death in a vehicle you can't really control and then eating garbage that will eventually kill you.

i dont understand what that has to do with lots of people = no weirdos?

Your statement is almost in complete agreement with what i said... lots of people drive... you think lots of those people that drive are insane... isnt that basicaly what i said?

I dont think everyone who watches/enjoys anime is weird, i just think theres a high % of the people that do who are very weird, and I don't think that just because lots of people go to anime conventions automaticaly means they are all socially well adjusted and not spergloids.

Define weird. I think the people in the polarbear club are weird but I wouldn't call them sperglords.

"hey, that guy is weird!"

can we define sperglord please

I want to participate but I am ignant
Aspies, but more than that. Imagine Sheldon from Big Bang Theory (even if you don't watch it you know of him/it) only without the multiple doctorates/masters degrees and employment to back it up.

Alawen's Mensa example was pretty spot on, I've encountered quite a few sperglords in those circles.

@Gotrocks I think that's the most extreme definition of 'weird' I've ever seen.

Examples of sperglords. One out of eight of them has a real job and they aren't teenagers. Look at any top 8 list from any big MTG tournament and you'll see a recurring pattern (and no it's not the same people always at top 8).

Just like at the WSoP, far more people who are not qualified for MtG Pro Tours attend than are qualified for playing in the main event.
I forgot to address this one. Grand Prix are not like Pro Tours in that there are qualifiers, the GP's you literally just sign up and can play with 0 prerequisites. The record GP (GP Vegas) had around 4k players.

Society at large defines what is weird. Gaming and comic cons used to be fringe activities. Now gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry and Hollywood celebrities go to cons. That means it's not weird anymore. Inter-racial marriage used to be illegal. Now it's not a very big deal. Social constructs don't have any objective existence. They only have the meaning that the general population gives them, 100% perception.

The same is true of most Grand Prix events. The earliest didn't draw a lot of spectators, but they have for quite some time. If you're basing your knowledge of big MtG events on the environment at your local card shop, it's not the same at all.
