Was this actually true?
Yes yes yes yes yes. Although I don't remember if or when it was changed on live. I remember right when the game came out, like within a few months, someone figured out that you could charm a mob, give it a Ykesha and then kill it to get it back.

I remember very well, because there was a necromancer in my guild who gave a Ykesha to his pet, and didn't realize that you had to be able to loot the corpse to get your item back. Basically he lost about 15000 plat.

That's not classic. Where's Nirgon and Elethia?

Reported numerous times. :P

I recall the underlying issue is no drop trading bugs that need to get worked out before this can be effected.

You can totally do that shit with weapons. People (like Save, that dirty bastard!) are always dictating cliff golems and giving them stun whips and root weapons and see invis buffs and stuff.

All you KoS-with-VS people are just lucky that giving him a see-invis item doesn't actually make him permanently see invis!

I don't think you can give weapons to something unless it is charmed though? A number of people on the server swear that NPCs equip and benefit from other items as well, though they don't drop them later when they are killed. I'm pretty skeptical though. I find it unlikely that I could go charm an orc pawn and give him a 5/55 ring and see his hit point % drop because he suddenly has 2-3x as many hp as he normally would.

The weapons stuff is also selectively disabled I think. You can give a 30/40 sk/pal wep to a low-level summoned pet and it will hit super hard, but I've tried to give weighted axes to charmed noobie mobs and they don't wield it or do increased damage or anything.

You can give noncharmed mobs weapons. Did it all the time on red99 when I played there. Just has to be calmed or from around the corner.

A while back when I was camping cloak in MM, I was giving the living mobs there bronze just with sneak and they equipped it. They did not drop it though when I killed them.

One of my favorite gifts to NPCs in live was to give scarab armor to the Priest of Discord.

I loved seeing that dufus in a green plate hat and breastplate.
