How exactly does guard assist work?

The signature says Wyoming Knott, i wasn't in DDW and i started playing late velious so i don't know, but pretty sure if Faerie was a troll, it is by far the most legit one i've seen so far.

My connection/computer makes me crash when zoning sometimes, but you'll never see me plug in earnest. And I could have easily gated, just had it in my mind that the guards would attack if I were nuked and was surprised when they didn't.
