I understand that you don't want to experiment on red with item loot. I know one can cite valid reasons such as why implement it late in the lifespan of a server that has a bubble of kunark and god loot on it, I get it. So I'd like to highlight a suggestion/solution to perhaps appeal to all concerned parties, a solution I saw posted elsewhere but felt it deemed its own thread, and is as follows.

Launch a beta server. Populate said server with character copies from red. Engage in pre-experimentation in item loot varients, bagging varients, no drop tags, etc. As nirgon said, one doesn't experiment with a pizza recipe by dumping chocolate all over it, one would add a droplet or two to a bite sized portion, taste, and continue.

This is why we should test the most controversial issues, such as item loot, concurrently with continuing resist fixes, and even before team composition testing. Frankly, additional feedback that would come from more pvp engagements on a beta server may provide to be more useful than current red99 feedback. The forums are a good indication that the natives are restless, and while I understand that Velious is the main effort at the moment, lets start examining mechanics (such as item loot variants be they random, RZ, or darktide) sooner, rather than later.
What incentive are you going to give people to spend their time on a beta server testing these changes knowing their progress will be wiped out when they could be acquiring permanent pixels on R99?

You'll end up with about 20 diehards setting all the policy and 75% of the population not getting their say. This is not science.

Because all of that is going to happen either way.

There is going to be a beta server, there was one for red99 (But we as a community demanded the server be launched, due to our eagerness, assuming bugs from null's miscarriage would be fixed later.) Why not launch a beta earlier, way earlier, as red fixes are ongoing, but let people fuck around with different item loot variants. You don't need (and frankly it just complicates) full coded team rule sets to experiment with that.

Item loot is a huge topic on here if you haven't noticed. Lets get that shit hammered out early.

I just don't think you'll get enough people putting in enough time to make the test results worth anything. I'm not disagreeing with your idea at all, just doubting the effectiveness. I could be wrong.

I'd rather them just say, the weekend of January 31st we're going to make R99 item loot with X rules. On Monday we'll switch it off, roll back the server to before we turned on item loot, give a week long double exp bonus and do a full repop. Then at least people won't have a choice to play and you'll probably get better results.

First of all, they will not do this, it has been stated and falls in-line with their policy that your pixels will never be fucked with. Second of all, you think that disrupting the red server for even a weekend and rerolling, which Nihilum etc would go apeshit over, would gather more data than months of a beta server?

A beta server is going to happen for teams, that has also been started by nilbog, all i'm stating is might as well get that puppy up this winter and start experimenting with item loot, despite all of Alecta's work on more general red99 fixes in all likelihood not being completed at that point.

It has already been said that there will be no item loot on red99. It isn't going to be implemented, even for just one day. You also can't judge the success of a server off of one day. Beta servers are always a good idea and there is nothing to lose from it.

Just because they open a beta server doesn't mean they are going to take all their information from their findings on that server. If it is a flop it is a flop, nothing to lose.
