Arcticmud http://mud.arctic.org/ was my favorite. Krynn based.
MUD loosely equals multi user dungeon and were/are the text only precursors to EQ wow, etc. Super good times circa 1990, or if your baud is shit.

That's one of the things I like about EQ over WoW. You have that time between abilities to type out your chat.
I didn't mind being in Vent with guildies or RL friends in WoW, but I'm not joining random voice chat for PUGs with people I know nothing about. In those instances, I like typing, but when you have a button to press every 1.5sec, you don't have time to type. Unless your a bard, then you still don't have time to type in EQ.
