You understand that trading bundles and futures etc... these are relatively new tools that catholics and the greeks didn't let control their societies, right? I mean catholics saved up money to invest in monasteries that would in turn produce more capital etc....the good ol' fashion style of capital investment.
Catholics and the greeks before them, didn't live in a world where you invested some money in the monestary until the speculation drove stock price up -- then they move their capital to the next opportunity in a few months (in a quick, timely, unrestricted manner). It took centuries for this kind of fiance to develop and its depend on various institutions that take humans time to develop.
This is not old its new. Corporations used to have values incompatible with finance's bottom-line...like paying employees more then they technically have to keep their post filled or investing in the long-term growth of the company.
Small c conservatives are to blame for gridlock IMO -- not the entire field of finance (although its a very conservative dominated field). You just find 2 different groups of conservative minded people and call it a political spectrum.
I don't think I guy that thinks people should be jailed for writing a Nazi book are very "liberal" minded. They might call themselves liberal democrats in America...but they got their attitude from their family's values, hierarchical ideas about good and bad people...conservative thinking. Not liberal thinking.
Just like conservatives in the Republican Party, conservative Democrats pick safe targets that are weaker than them to blame their problems on and target for abuse. Than they cowtail to any corrupt piece of shit that happens to have power in their own party. As if that fact makes them good. And those that lack power are by definition bad.
Most conservative Democrats think a few fixes with corporate America will make everything better. Particularly, they think we need to make sure corporations stop supporting Republicans. Because that's the main problem with corporations in their mind. They vote Republican and elect sexist/racist leaders.
