That would help them, they won't make the 10k in the work force so this allows them to save cash for a downpayment on a new house, a car, some clothes, eating out, doctor visits, quality of life improvements.

“Typically, welding school tuition fees start at roughly $5,000 for courses lasting from 3–7 months”

“Welder. National average salary: $38,023“

Yea college classes are fairly priced, fairly paced not wasting large chunks of one’s time, and also not filled with fluff bullshit useless required electives

It's not, probably is representative of the actual national average. Recently came out for example UP is paying its thermite welders on order of ~$31/hr, this coming out because RR workers are on the verge of striking and the government's trying to prevent it so there's federal involvement between the respective parties. Factoring in layoff time, etc, some of those guys aren't making all that much. Consistent hours, proper pay on-time, overtime, etc, yeah they'll make a lot more than $40K. Same thing as the gender gap, what's present in practice can usually be explained away for reasons that do hold up upon scrutiny.

I’ve heard differences in gender pay can also be due to men being more likely to aggressively negotiate their salary whereas women tend to be more passive accepting the initial salary offered
