Protesting isn’t domestic terrorism. It’s annoying and primarily the domain of the unemployed, unmarried, obese, and those who believe in conspiracies, but it’s a legally enshrined protection of the 1st amendment. In contrast, the constitution does not provide any justification for sending unmarked federal agents into protest areas without clear jurisdiction
This is a good statement.

My brother lives in Portland and works downtown (the area where the protests are centered). He's there almost daily for work. The only "shitshow" going on there is in the 2-3 blocks directly around the courthouse. The rest of the city is fine. It isn't the hellscape conservative media portrays it to be.

tl;dr: whole lotta people here talking that don't know shit.

I have a lot of liberal friends up in Seattle that were saying the same thing about CHAZ/CHOP. It's like they are trying to downplay the severity of the damage as to make the original intent of the protests more meaningful. The reality is, even if it is only a few blocks where the epicenter is, it also spreads throughout the rest of the city.

https://www.newsbreak.com/oregon/por...-investigation

The link is a newstory showing where over 100 arsons were committed in Portland over a 2 week period. Youll notice that its far more than just a couple of blocks.

Yep. The vast majority of those are from burning piles of stuff in the street to slow law enforcement advancement, dumpsters, and cars. There aren't burned out husks of buildings all over downtown. The article you linked also listed fireworks as arson [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

"Suspected causes include fireworks and Molotov cocktails. Targets range from offices to vehicles to portable toilets, piles of debris and dumpsters."

This article was published more than 2 weeks before 4th of July, so blaming this on celebratory fireworks (not that you specifically are blaming the 4th of July) would be incorrect. Additionally, fireworks are stated as the catalyst, not the fuel.

Nice. info from reliable sources on the ground is a good thing. its a pain to navigate various biased media sites trying to put together the real story.

Ive been wondering, why did they choose the courthouse? Just picked the closest federal building to be a symbol they could spray paint?

I'm not sure why the courthouse was chosen. My brother hasn't been participating in the protests, he's just been in the vicinity due to work, so he doesn't have a lot of inside info.

I did live in Portland for 34 years before moving abroad a few years ago for work, so probably 80% of my facebook feed is people who are from Portland or who live in Portland. A huge portion of my feed for the last month has been constant protest updates, photos, people livestreaming the protests, and information about medic stations and meeting points. My impression from what I'm seeing from people who are actually participating is that it is mostly unplanned and a lot of decisions are collectively decided as events are unfolding. So, as for "choosing targets", I haven't seen/heard of anything like that. My guess is that it's just a symbol of the justice system. /shrug

Obviously, I'm not personally present, so this is all second hand knowledge, but the sheer volume of what I see/read on a daily basis makes me fairly confident that I at least have a better grasp of what's going on than what's in a lot of the media stories circulating.

Courthouse was chosen because its a government building and they can legally protest there

I think we can all stop for a moment here and give a nice hand to Trexller, regardless of who you think danced where near what collapsing building.

Like all good threads, this one was invaded by the Sexual Deviant Brigade early on, this time with post #23. For over 100 posts the battle between the Portland Peaceful Protesters and Weird Dildo Enthusiasts raged on. The Marconi was silent, there was no one to answer the distress call, the compartments were flooding one by one and this thread was going down.

But then something unsinkable happened. Trexller stepped up at post #127, with the simple yet withering rejoinder:

An attempt was made to redirect, but Trexller was not to be deterred. A further warning was issued with post #135:

And then? Like a banshee when the lament is over, the keening is no longer heard! For over 70 posts now, just the quiet tranquility of a soft-spoken and reasoned debate that is sure to make better biological men and women out of us all.

Thanks again!

You've also been a good steward for discussions since it reopened. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

What did the protestors burn down last night?
