i don't see why single payer would stifle research/innovation in our present system of cronie caitalism. healthcare tech/research companies would basically become liek the defense sector, gobbling up fat government contracts and churning out the best tech available. the difference would be that we wouldn't have the option to buy what we want and we'd have to wait longer for treatment since there would likely be fewer providers and the care would be of overall lower quality.

As someone who is exposed to medical research, there is just as much innovation coming out of single payer or hybrid countries as there is in the US. My father-in-law is an infectious disease researcher who developed several vaccines, and he spends more time in Europe than he does the US.

Do you know what stifles innovation? Clinicians who have to spend all their time battling insurance companies instead of furthering their craft.
